- Abstract
-
A postcard, postdated April 14, 1909, bearing a message in L.M. Montgomery's handwriting addressed to "Mr. Geo. B. MacMillan". George Boyd MacMillan (1881-1953) was a Scottish journalist and writer, and a favourite correspondent of L.M. Montgomery. The two were first introduced, by letter, in 1903, through an American writer who was developing a circle of literary pen friends. Although Montgomery and MacMillan only met briefly in-person, during her 1911 honeymoon in Scotland, their voluminous exchange of letters, postcards, and gifts continued until late 1941, just months before Montgomery's death. PARTIAL TRANSCRIPT: "Good for daffodils? Your springs are a month earlier than ours. Rec'd your letter. Will write sooner than you deserve and will advise as to further treatment of daffodils. Meanwhile leave it alone. L.M.M." Handwritten message on front of card reads: "Wouldn't you like to lie and dream among the buttercups and daises?"
