The quote in the message is from the book-length poem 'Festus', by Philip James Bailey. The most likely reason the card has no stamps or postmarks is because it was enclosed with the "copy of 'Fate' " mentioned in L.M. Montgomery's message. The "naval battle" referred to may be the Battle of Jutland (May-June 1916). Per the Royal Museums Greenwich, this was "the only major fleet battle of the First World War". https://www.rmg.co.uk/discover/behind-the-scenes/blog/naval-battles-firs...

- Abstract
-
A postcard bearing a message in L.M. Montgomery's handwriting addressed to "Mr. Geo. B. MacMillan". George Boyd MacMillan (1881-1953) was a Scottish journalist and writer, and a favourite correspondent of L.M. Montgomery. The two were first introduced, by letter, in 1903, through an American writer who was developing a circle of literary pen friends. Although Montgomery and MacMillan only met briefly in-person, during her 1911 honeymoon in Scotland, their voluminous exchange of letters, postcards, and gifts continued until late 1941, just months before Montgomery's death. PARTIAL TRANSCRIPT: "Dear Mr. McMillan. Some time ago you asked me for [another?] copy of 'Fate.' Mine has [turned?] up so I enclose a copy of it. If we 'live in deeds not - years, in feelings not - in figures on a dial,' the world is many centuries older than when I wrote you. I can never forget the agony of the [first re-ports?] of the naval battle. L.M.M."
